This weekend was relaxing. I spent most of Saturday in the hammock, reading Into the Wild. It's a great book and no, this book was not written by Rick Warren, John Eldridge or any other of the Christian authors you can throw out there. This is not Wild at Heart. It's by John
Krakauer and tells the story of Chris
McCandless'
adventure into Alaska. Yes, it was made into a movie but I haven't seen it so I can't tell you if its any good. I can tell you the book is an easy, interesting and over all good read. I've been reading more lately, probably because I'm on a reading team and don't want to let them down. But I probably already have since we aren't in first place and I see no way that will happen in the remaining five weeks of the competition. Hey, at least we all get free lunch for participating. Everyone wins!
Which brings me to another topic. I went to this presentation last week called "Generation Me" and the professor was talking about her
research and book she wrote about today's college students. Insightful and funny. Maybe I'll pick up her book next. She talked about how college students today have grown up with the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality and have in some ways been conditioned to think they can never fail. Entitlement comes to mind.
I didn't want to go to church this Sunday. I secretly in my head had decided on Saturday night I wasn't going to go. I even rationalized my absence, what it would cost to drive to church with gas at $4.50+ a gallon. I don't know one person there so they won't miss me anyway, I could just listen to sermons I have downloaded that I haven't gotten to yet. I could do my own study and that would be more beneficial to me. Well, the alarm went off and I jumped in the shower and got ready. I was dressed and everything and was still convinced I wasn't going to go. I pulled out the milk to have breakfast and spilled it, cussed and then realized I
desperately needed to go to church. I've gotten so...I don't even know the word. It all just seems so hard, community.
When Andrew asked what I did this weekend and I said nothing, it didn't surprise him. He asked why I'm so antisocial with my awesome personality. I thought he was being sarcastic and I told him I hated him (the usual response to anything he says) and he said he really wasn't being sarcastic. It made me start to think about a lot of things and I can't even spell it out right now.
I can tell you I'm excited to see my family and friends this weekend.
