I started substitute teaching this week. Wednesday was World Cultures and AP European History. Thursday was Algebra 1 and tomorrow is some 6th grade class at the middle school. I didn't think I would like being in the classroom as much as I do. Today was a very trying day but from what I hear, the regular teacher doesn't really have control of the class either. I'm shocked at some of the things I've seen at FHS. I've been out of school for 9 years now and going back was a bit surreal. One kid asked me if I went to FHS and I said yes. Then he asked if I was a cheerleader in high school, I said yes. Then he asked if I had short hair in high school. I started thinking maybe he was my stalker as I said yes and then he told me his sister's name and it turns out I graduated with her. It was just weird how this kid remembered me though.
One thing I've been shocked by is how disrespectful these kids are. I don't ever remember treating a sub the way I was treated today. They don't even pretend to care about their work. Maybe it was because I was in the AP classes, or it could just be we were nicer kids, but man...
My favorite story from today:
A particular boy couldn't keep his mouth shut. I asked him to quiet down because they were taking a quiz. He did for a moment and then started clicking his tongue. I asked him to be quiet and he said he had this problem, he just couldn't control it. I told him he could come in after school and maybe we could find a solution. He shut up. My message to the students: DON'T MESS WITH MS. AGUILAR!
It doesn't look like I'll be doing this work much longer though. I accepted a job today at UCSD. I'll be an assistant in the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Office. I'm really excited about the opportunities this position will bring but it also brings a sad reality. I'll be leaving my family and friends quickly. I know 2-3 hours drive to most of them isn't too bad, but I also know that out of sight is out of mind with most people I would want to stay close to. Does that mean I have simple minded friends? I've already heard, "I'll come visit!" But I wonder how sincere that is. I guess time will tell. So, I would say I'm thrilled, sad, and excited.
